The paper introduces the concept of Lorentzian framed manifolds: these are globally framed manifolds [\textit{S. Goldberg} and \textit{K. Yano}, Ill. J. Math. 15, 456-474 (1971; Zbl 0215.230)] with a Lorentzian metric and it is a first step towards studying the geometry of framed manifolds with lightlike distributions. It turns out that Lorentzian framed manifolds differ basically from Riemannian ones. It is shown that globally hyperbolic spacetimes can carry a regular framed structure. Some known physical spacetimes of general relativity are shown to carry a framed structure.
