The author classifies some algorithms for constructing smooth interpolating surfaces with piecewise polynomials, that is algorithms that convert a ``mesh of 3D data'' into the coefficients of a piecewise polynomial representation. A useful table, which describes in detail the interpolation conditions is given. The algorithms are grouped into blocks according to the three major approaches to the interpolation problem: the single patch approach, the blending approach and the splitting approach. Exhaustive references are given.
