In the first part of this paper an inequality, for any compact minimal submanifold M in the sphere, is given involving only the simplest spectral invariants of M: the first and the second eigenvalues of the Laplacian, the dimension, the volume and the integral of the scalar curvature. Moreover if the equality holds, M must verify an intrinsic condition (M is Einstein) and an extrinsic one (certain tensor in the normal bundle is proportional to the metric). As an example, equality holds for the first standard immersion of a compact symmetric space of rank one in the sphere. In the second part a lower bound for the first eigenvalue of the Laplacian on a \(P_{2\pi}\)-manifold (i.e. a compact Riemannian manifold all of whose geodesics are periodic with least common period 2\(\pi)\) is given in terms of the dimension and the lower bound of the Ricci curvature. The bound is sharp, in the sense that the equality holds for compact symmetric spaces of rank one.
