This paper is devoted to equations of the form \[ \ddot x+f(x)\dot x^2+g(x)=0 \tag{\(1\)} \] with a center at \(0\). When \(f\) and \(g\) are analytic the paper's main result provides a characterization of the isochronicity of the center (when \(f\) and \(g\) are \(C^1\) this criterion reduces to a necessary condition). Further interesting conditions for the isochronicity of the center are discussed, and applications to Loud's and cubic systems are provided.
