This paper applies the well known averaging method (popularized by Krylov and Bogolyubov) to quasilinear wave equations. The technique is first explained for a weakly nonlinear hyperbolic system with periodic initial conditions, and then, as a special case, one considers the equations of motion of a liquid in an elastic nonuniform tube. The interaction between two waves is considered and the conditions for resonances are obtained. To conclude, one shows how to take account of viscosity, heat conduction and friction in the model.
