An \(U(n)\) Yang-Mills-Higgs theory on a Riemannian surface \(\Sigma \) with a Higgs field in the fundamental representation of the group \(U(n)\) is developed in this very interesting paper. The vortex equations on \(\Sigma \) are proved to be integrable under certain conditions.
