The author discusses three different definitions of measure theoretical entropy of a measurable cover in a measure theoretical dynamical system. Two of these definitions were introduced earlier in \textit{P.-P. Romagnoli}, [Ergodic Theory Dyn. Syst. 23, 1601--1610 (2003; Zbl 1056.37017)]. The main result of the paper is that these three definitions coincide. The author also gives a proof of the classical variational principle based on a comparison between the entropies of covers and partitions.
