New characterizations of metric trees and Gromov hyperbolic spaces are given and results of \textit{I. Chatterji} and \textit{G. A. Niblo} [Groups Geom. Dyn. 1, No. 3, 281--299 (2007; Zbl 1137.20036)] are generalized. A remarkable feature of this note is the fact that the results obtained have a purery metric character.
