The author provides a lucid account of the classical Hodge conjecture, with a fairly comprehensive discussion of its failure when one either tries to formulate a version for the general Kähler setting, or when one works with integral coefficients. The author shows rather convincingly, that the strongest evidence to date in support of the Hodge conjecture comes from the algebraic side of the subject. Indeed, the reviewer finds Section 3, on absolute Hodge classes and Hodge loci, fascinating reading. Finally, the author has sprinkled throughout this paper some of her excellent contributions to this subject.
