The present paper defines well-posedness of feedback systems in terms of the topology on the extended space. Let \((H_ e,E_ e)\) be the extended resolution space of (H,E), H being a complex Hilbert space and \(E=\{P^ t: t\in \Gamma \}^ a \)resolution of the identity on H. A basic feedback system on \((H_ e,E_ e)\) is a pair of causal continuous operators (K,C) on \(H_ e\) related by the equations: \(y=KCe,\quad e=uy,\quad u,y,e\in H_ e.\) A basic system (K,C) is well-posed if \((I-KC)^{-1}\in C(H_ e),\) \(C(H_ e)\) denoting the continuous causal linear transformations on \(H_ e\). A sufficient condition for well-posedness of a basic feedback system (K,C) is formulated and the case \(H=\ell^ 2\) (0,\(\infty)\) (K an infinite lower triangular matrix, C an infinite strictly lower triangular matrix) is considered as an example. For a strongly causal operator A on H it is shown that \((I_ e-A_ e)\) is invertible on \(H_ e\) and \((I_ e-A_ e)^{-1}\in C(H_ e).\) The last section characterizes all well-posed discrete-time systems by the following two results: \(T\in C(H_ e)\) if and only if it can be represented as a lower triangular matrix with respect to the basis \(B=\{e_ i\}^{\infty}_{i=0}\) and \(T\in C(H_ e)\) is invertible in \(C(H_ e)\) if and only if it has no zero on the diagonal.
