A finite group is said to be \(\pi\)-separable \((\pi =set\) of primes) if every composition factor is either a \(\pi\)-group or a \(\pi\) '-group \((\pi '=the\) set of primes not in \(\pi)\). It is well known that every section of a \(\pi\)-separable group satisfies the \(D_{\pi}\) (and \(D_{\pi '})\) properties, i.e. it has a Hall \(\pi\)-subgroup (\(\pi\) '-subgroup), say H, and every \(\pi\)-subgroup (\(\pi\) '-subgroup) of G is contained in a conjugate of H. On the other hand there are simple groups which are neither \(\pi\)-groups nor \(\pi\) '-groups all sections of which satisfy the \(D_{\pi}\) and \(D_{\pi '}\) properties. In this paper the authors characterize all finite groups in which all sections satisfy the \(D_{\pi}\) and \(D_{\pi '}\) properties in terms of their composition factors.
