    Let \(k\geq1\). According to \textit{F. Sullivan} [Can. J. Math. 31, 628-636 (1979; Zbl 0422.46011)] a Banach space \(X\) is said to be \(k\)-UR if for any \(\varepsilon >0\) there is \(\delta >0\) such that whenever \(x_ i\in X\), \(\| x_ i\|\leq1\), \(i=1,\ldots,k+1\), and \(\| x_1+\cdots+x_{k+1}\|\geq(1- \delta)(k+1)\), then \(V(x_1,\ldots,x_{k+1})<\varepsilon\), where \[ V(x_1,\ldots,x_{k+1}) = \sup\det\left| \begin{matrix} 1, & \ldots &,1 \\ f_ 1(x_ 1), & \ldots & ,f_1(x_{k+1}) \\ \vdots && \vdots \\ f_ k(x_ k), & \ldots &,f_ k(x_{k+1}) \end{matrix}\right| \] and the supremum is taken over all \(f_ i\in X^*\), \(\| f_ i\|\leq1\). By \textit{Ky Fan} and \textit{I. Glicksberg} [Proc. Nat. Acad. Sci. U.S.A. 41, 947-953 (1955; Zbl 0065.345)] \(X\) is called \(k\)R (\(k\geq2)\) if a sequence \(\{x_ i\}\subset X\) is Cauchy whenever \(\lim \| x_{n_ 1}+ \cdots +x_{n_ k}\| =k\), where the limit is taken for \(n_1\to\infty, \ldots ,n_ k\to\infty\). After recalling some known results how the above notions are related to reflexivity and superreflexivity, the authors prove the following theorem: Every strictly convex \(k\)-UR Banach space is \((k+1)\)R. Further an example is given that such a space need not be \(k\)R. A 2R- space isomorphic to \(\ell_2\) and which is not \(k\)-UR for any \(k\geq1\) is also constructed.
