The paper continues earlier work of the authors on the same subject [Ann. Probab. 14, 663-676 (1986; Zbl 0597.60019)]. Special emphasis is given to the problem of the best-approximating Poisson distribution for a class of Poisson binomial distributions with respect to selected probability metrics (total variation, Kolmogorov- and Fortet-Mourier metric). Estimations for the corresponding distances are obtained via a suitable semigroup approach.
