Sums of a certain family of series (Q1089478): Difference between revisions

\textit{M. Vowe} and \textit{H.-J. Seiffert} [Elem. Math. 42, 111-112 (1987; Zbl 1253.33007)] evaluated the sum of a terminating series involving binomial coefficients by identifying the series with an Eulerian beta integral. In an attempt to find the sum without evaluating the Eulerian integral involved, the author was led naturally to the fact that the Vowe-Seiffert formula is just one of numerous interesting (and useful) consequences of Kummer's summation theorem for a hypergeometric series with argument 1/2. Some of these other consequences, relevant to the present context, are also considered briefly.
