Let \=X\(=(X_ 0,X_ 1)\) be a Banach couple of spaces continuously imbedded in a Hausdorff topological vector space and let E be a Banach lattice of real valued sequences with \({\mathbb{Z}}\) as index set such that \((\min \{1,2^ n\})_ n\in E\). The real interpolation space \(K_ E(\bar X)\) is defined to consist of all \(x\in X_ 0+X_ 1\) such that \((K(2^ n,x;\bar X))_ n\in E\). Put \(\| x\| _{K(\bar X)}=\| (K(2^ n,x;\bar X))\| _ E\), where K(t,x;\=X)\(=\inf \{\| x_ 0\| _{X_ 0}+t\| x_ 1\| _{X_ 1}:\) \(x=x_ 0+x_ 1\}\) for any \(t>0.\) In this paper it is shown that the space \(K_ e(\bar X)\) (the complex interpolation space [\=X]\({}_{\theta}\), \(0<\theta <1)\) contains no subspace isomorphic to \(\ell ^ 1\), provided the inclusion mapping \(X_ 0\cap X_ 1\hookrightarrow X_ 0+X_ 1\) is a Rosenthal operator and the condition (a) (the condition (b)) holds, respectively (a) A Banach lattice E contains no subspace isomorphic to \(\ell ^ 1\) and the fundamental function of E defined for \(t>0\) by \(\phi (t)=\| (\min \{1,2^ n/t\})_ n\| _ E^{-1}\) satisfies min\(\{\) 1,1/t\(\}\) \(\phi\) (t)\(\to 0\) as \(t\to 0,\infty.\) (b) Every separable subspace of \(X_ i\) has a separable dual space \((i=0\) or 1).
