Nearly extendable \((=NE)\) maps and sets were introduced by \textit{K. Borsuk} for compact metric spaces [Bull. Acad. Polon. Sci. Ser. Sci. Math. 23, 753-760 (1975; Zbl 0318.54045); Houston J. Math. 1, 1-13 (1975; Zbl 0317.54020)]. Using the theory of approximative inverse systems and approximative resolutions, the author extends both concepts to arbitrary spaces. In the general situation, the NE sets turn out to be precisely the approximatively movable spaces; for compact metric spaces, the NE sets coincide with the approximative ANRs in the sense of Clapp. It is proved that products, cones, suspensions, various hyperspace constructions and symmetric products preserve NE maps and sets. Now, let X be a compact space of finite type. The central part of the paper deals with the fixed point theory of maps f: \(X\to X^ n/G\) into a symmetric product (where G is subgroup of the symmetric group \({\mathcal S}_ n)\). Generalizing the work of \textit{C. N. Maxwell} [Proc. Am. Math. Soc. 8, 808-815 (1957; Zbl 0078.153)], the author defines a Lefschetz number L(f) and proves the following: If f is an NE map (this condition is always satisfied when X is an NE set) and if L(f)\(\neq 0\), then there exists a point \(x\in X\) such that \(f(x)=[x_ 1,...,x_ n]\in X^ n/G\) with \(x_ i=x\) for some i. The special case \(n=1\) means that each NE map f: \(X\to X\) has a fixed point. This extends the Lefschetz fixed point theorem to various classes of generalized ANRs.
