Let W be the complete weight enumerator of a self-dual linear code over a finite commutative ring R with \(1\neq 0\), where R is assumed to possess a group homomorphism \(\chi:(R,+)\to {\mathbb{C}}^ x\) such that \(\chi (ab)=1\) for all b implies \(a=0\) (e.g. R a field or \({\mathbb{Z}}/m{\mathbb{Z}})\). Then W is invariant for the matrix group \({\mathfrak g}\) generated by the transformation \(T=| R|^{-1/2}(\chi (ab))_{a,b}\) of the MacWilliams identity, the matrices \((\delta_{au,b})_{a,b}\), where u is a unit, and the matrices \((\chi (ra^ 2)\delta_{a,b})_{a,b},\) \(r\in R.\) Theorem A. Assume, that R is a field with char \(R\neq 2\). Then \({\mathfrak g}\) is the direct product of SL(2,\(| R|)\) with a cyclic group of order 2 or 4. Further, the identical representation of \({\mathfrak g}\) is a direct sum of 2 irreducible representations. Theorem B. Assume, that R is a ring with char R\(=2\) and \(a^ 2\neq 0\) for \(0\neq a\in R\). Then \({\mathfrak g}\) is a soluble group of order \(4| U| | R|^ 2,\) U the group of units in R. Further, the identical representation of \({\mathfrak g}\) is irreducible. Parts of these theorems where already reported without proofs in 1970 by \textit{A. M. Gleason} [Actes Congr. internat. Math. 1970, 3, 211-215 (1971; Zbl 0287.05010)].
