The author treats the quasiperiodic Duffing equation (1) \(\ddot x+\omega^ 2 x=-2\varepsilon\omega\bigl[\alpha\dot x+\omega\bigl({4\over 3} \beta x^ 3+f_ 1 \sin \omega_ 1 t+f_ 2 \sin \omega_ 2 t\bigr)\bigr]\), where \(\varepsilon\) is a small parameter, \(\omega_ k- \omega=\varepsilon \omega \Delta_ k\) \((k=1,2)\), and \(f_ 1\), \(f_ 2\) are sufficiently small, too. Using a van der Pol transformation followed by first and second order averaging, equation (1) is turned into the coupled cubic equations (2) \(\bigl\{\alpha^ 2+[-\Delta_ 1+\beta(I_ 1+2I_ 2)]^ 2\bigr\} I_ 1=f^ 2_ 1\), \(\bigl\{\alpha^ 2+[- \Delta_ 2+\beta(I_ 2+2I_ 1)]^ 2\bigr\} I_ 2=f^ 2_ 2\) for the amplitudes \(I_ 1\), \(I_ 2\) of the first harmonic components of the approximate frequency response functions corresponding to the forcing frequencies \(\omega_ 1\), \(\omega_ 2\) respectively. Fixing \(\alpha\), \(\beta\), \(\Delta_ 2-\Delta_ 1\), and varying \(\Delta_ 1\), \(f^ 2_ 1+f^ 2_ 2\), system (2) is solved and the result is compared with the numerically integrated equation arising from (1) by first order averaging. Contrary to the Duffing equation with periodic forcing, in the present case the frequency response function also exhibits period doubling and secondary cusps. But these results are not compared with solutions of the original equation (1).
