Wave propagation in shells has been subject of investigation by many researchers. In this paper the authors apply the wave propagation approach to the analysis of vibration characteristics of circular cylindrical shells made of a recently developed material called ``functionally graded material'' (FGM for short). FGMs are composite materials, and in this study circular cylindrical shells composed of two materials are considered. The technique of wave propagation used in this work is not new, and the numerical results obtained by the authors through Matlab coincide with those from the literature. The same approach was also used by the authors et al. in the paper [Appl. Math. Mech., Engl. Ed. 30, No. 11, 1393--1404 (2009; Zbl 1353.74035)] for the analysis of vibration frequencies of FGM circular cylindrical shells filled with a fluid.
