In this paper we study properties of solutions of the system of hypergeometric differential equations related to a root system. The main theme is the explicit determination in some cases of certain coefficients of the matrix which connects one basis of local solutions to another basis of local solutions by means of analytic continuation. Our main result can be formulated as follows. In a certain polytope of parameter values we can calculate the limit value of a certain basis of series solutions ``at infinity'' at a special point of the boundary of the domain of convergence of those solutions (the identity element). In the rank one case this is essentially Gauss' summation formula for hypergeometric series. An important tool we use in our proofs is the existence of a perfect pairing between spaces of local solutions of the equations with dual parameters.
