In this paper, the authors consider interpolation problems on linear manifolds obtained as intersections of some hyperplanes from a given set of such hyperplanes in \(\mathbb{R}^k\). Specifically, the problem is to recover a polynomial of degree \(n\) from its trace and the traces of some of its derivatives on the collection of all the manifolds of codimension \(s\). This is done inductively with respect to the codimension \(s\). The authors develop a notion of consistency of the data and they show that the resulting conditions are necessary and sufficient for the existence of an interpolating polynomial. A condition for the uniqueness of the polynomial interpolant is given as well. Similar questions for interpolation by homogeneous polynomials on spherical manifolds are also addressed. The final section deals with several special multivariate interpolation problems which are covered by the general treatment of this paper. These include Chung-Yao interpolation, Hakopian interpolation, tensor products, and interpolation on triangles and tetrahedra as known from the finite element context.
