A minimal residual smoothing (MRS) technique is used to accelerate the convergence of the multilevel iterative method by smoothing the residuals of the original iterative sequence. The sequence with smoothed residuals is re-introduced into the multilevel iteration process. The method involving this acceleration procedure converges much faster than both the sequence generated by the original multilevel method and the sequence generated by the MRS technique. Numerical examples show the effectiveness of the new method.
