Poisson-Nijenhuis structures were first introduced by Magri and Morosi as a framework to the study of integrable systems. The compatibility conditions for a Poisson bivector and a Nijenhuis tensor to form a Poisson-Nijenhuis structure has been given in terms of Lie bialgebroids by \textit{Y. Kosmann-Schwarzbach} [Lett. Math. Phys. 38, 421--428 (1996; Zbl 1005.53060)]. In this paper, the author introduces the notion of strict Jacobi-Nijenhuis manifold, which seems to be a natural generalization of the definition of a Poisson-Nijenhuis manifold and a stronger version of Jacobi-Nijenhuis manifolds of \textit{J. C. Marrero, J. Monterde} and \textit{E. Padrón} [C.R. Acad. Sci. Paris, Sér. I, Math. 329, No. 9, 797--802 (1999; Zbl 0949.37056)]. Moreover, she characterizes strict Jacobi-Nijenhuis manifolds in terms of generalized Lie bialgebroids, which were first introduced by \textit{D. Iglesias} and \textit{J. C. Marrero} [J. Geom. Phys. 40, 176--199 (2001; Zbl 1001.17025)]. More precisely, let \((\Lambda ,E)\) be a Jacobi structure on \(M\) and \(\mathcal N\) be a Nijenhuis operator of the Lie algebroid structure on \(TM\times \mathbb R\). Then, associated with the Nijenhuis operator one can define a new Lie algebroid structure on \(A=TM\times \mathbb R\) and a 1-cocycle \(\phi _0=\mathcal N ^\ast (0,1)\), where \(\mathcal N ^\ast\) is the adjoint operator of \(\mathcal N\). On the other hand, the Jacobi structure \((\Lambda ,E)\) induces a Lie algebroid structure on \(A^\ast =T^\ast M\times \mathbf R\) and a 1-cocycle \(X_0=(-E,0)\). Therefore, \(((\Lambda ,E),\mathcal N)\) is a strict Jacobi-Nijenhuis structure if and only if \(((A,\phi _0),(A^\ast ,X_0))\) is a generalized Lie bialgebroid. We remark that the same theorem was independently proved by \textit{J. C. Marrero} and the reviewer in [Extr. Math. 17, 259--271 (2002; Zbl 1037.53075)].
