For the polar decomposition of an invertible deformation gradient tensor \(F=RU=VR,\) \(RR^ T=R^ TR=I,\) U and V are, respectively, symmetric right and left stretch tensors, R an orthogonal tensor and I the identity tensor, the stretch tensor \(U=(F^ TF)^{1/2}=:C^{1/2}\) is determined by its eigenvalues. These eigenvalues are used to compute the isotropic tensor-valued function G(C) of the left Cauchy-Green tensor which has to be represented by \(G(C)=\phi_ 0I+\phi_ 1C+\phi_ 2C^ 2\) in a threedimensional space. \(\{\phi_ 1,\phi_ 2,\phi_ 3\}\) as functions of the eigenvalues \(\{\lambda_ 1,\lambda_ 2,\lambda_ 3\}\) and of fundamental invariants \(\{I_ U\), \(II_ U\), \(III_ U\}\) are given.
