In the work of Schur the notion of ''representation group'' or ''Darstellungsgruppe'' was introduced. These groups have the property to lift all projective representations of some (finite) group over an algebraically closed field. Fong noticed that Schur's methods could be coupled to Clifford's work by exhibiting some single invariant character or module. The familiar proof of the Fong-Swan theorem gives the model of this kind of representation groups. So representation groups of characters are studied here. The contents of the paper are very detailed and it would be unwise to extract some result at random and to mention it here. Therefore the reader of these lines is urged to read this interesting paper for learning some new developments in these Clifford and Schur type areas.
