The monograph consisting of a preface, 9 chapters, references, and an index addresses aspects of the problem of designing the logic component for a class of hybrid dynamical systems (HDS) called switched controller systems (SCS). An SCS is a dynamic system composed of a finite number of continuous-time subsystems and a logical rule ensuring switching between them. Chapter 1 introduces HDS, controller and sensor switching problems. Chapter 2 presents the concept, necessary and sufficient conditions, and a number of more constructive sufficient conditions based on the S-procedure for quadratic state feedback stabilizability via controller switching for both asynchronously and synchronously SCS. Chapter 3 deals with robust state feedback stabilizability with a quadratic storage function and controller switching. This notion is closely related to the concept of dissipativity. The results are presented in a way similar to those in the previous chapter. Chapter 4 is concerned with \(H^{\infty}\) control with synchronous state and output feedback controller switching. The switching rule is computed by solving a Riccati differential equation of the game type and a discrete-time dynamic programming equation. The results are given in terms of the existence of solutions of these equations. Chapter 5 is concerned with the problems of state and output feedback absolute stabilizability of a linear uncertain continuous-time plant by synchronous controller switching. A necessary and sufficient condition for absolute output feedback stabilizability via controller switching is given. A sufficient condition suitable for real-time implementations of systems with unstructured uncertainty and a sufficient condition for systems with structured uncertainty for this property are included. Chapter 6 presents a necessary and sufficient condition for an uncertain time-varying linear system to be robustly output feedback controllable via synchronous switching. Chapter 7 introduces the concept of uniform robust observability for linear uncertain systems and gives a sufficient condition for this property. It follows the uncertainty approach of Chapters 5 and 6. Optimal robust sensor scheduling and real-time implementable model predictive sensor scheduling are included. Chapter 8 presents a method for almost optimal control of linear systems using stable switched controllers. These controllers are described by ODEs with discontinuous right-hand sides. Chapter 9 presents a method for simultaneous stabilization of a finite collection of linear time-varying plants using a switched controller. The book is a self-contained text assuming only a basic mathematical knowledge of modern control theory. It is an excellent up-to-date authoritative reference covering original results with complete mathematical proofs and illustrative examples. The monograph is intended both for researchers and advanced postgraduate students working in the areas of control engineering, theoretical computer science, and applied mathematics interested in the emerging field of hybrid dynamic systems.
