We are concerned with constructing a (nonlocal) solution operator for general difference schemes that allows to derive nonreflecting boundary conditions. We will apply this solution operator to the special cases of the 5-point star for the approximation of the wave equation and the Lax- Wendroff scheme and construct the corresponding absorbing boundary conditions. In the third section numerical results are given. For the wave equations we get less reflected energy than with conditions of Engquist-Majda type while for the shallow water equations good absorption properties can be achieved only at the cost of high storage and computing time requirements.
