A ring is fissible if its torsion additive subgroup is a ring direct summand, and strongly fissible if in addition this subgroup is a ring summand in any decomposition in which it is a group summand. The authors find a number of abelian group theoretic conditions which are equivalent to a ring being (strongly) fissible. They also deal with the p-primary analogue.
