The behaviour of the entropy under dynamical semigroups is studied. It is a well-known fact that the free energy increases, though even for the free energy only partial results exist whether it increases monotonically. We give a sufficient and necessary condition on the generator of the dynamical semigroup [corresponding to the form as it is given by \textit{G. Lindblad}, Commun. Math. Phys. 48, 119-130 (1976; Zbl 0343.47031)] to insure that the entropy always increases. If we consider the finite- dimensional case, it coincides with the condition that the tracial state is the fixed point of the evolution. For all other dynamical semigroups one can find some special \(\rho\), where the entropy decreases. Finally, it is shown in the special example of the Ghirardi-Rimini-Weber model that the entropy is not only strictly increasing, which is a consequence of the general estimates, but it is even possible to find a lower bound for this increase.
