Let \(X\) be smooth projective rigid Calabi-Yau threefold over the rational numbers. Then the third cohomology group \(H^3(\bar{X},\mathbb Q_l)\) is two-dimensional, and carries the action of the absolute Galois group of \(\mathbb Q\). The modularity conjecture asserts that the \(L\)-series attached to this Galois representation coincides with the \(L\)-series of some modular form [\textit{M.-H. Saito} and \textit{N. Yui}, J. Math. Kyoto Univ. 41, 403--419 (2001; Zbl 1077.14544)]. This is known, for example, for the Calabi-Yau threefold constructed by \textit{H. A. Verrill} [J. Number Theory 81, No. 2, 310--334 (2000; Zbl 0971.14034)]. The author gives another proof for the modularity of this particular Calabi-Yau threefold. The argument is based on the theorem of \textit{C. M. Skinner} and \textit{A. J. Wiles} on the modularity of certain two-dimensional Galois representations [Publ. Math., Inst. Hautes Étud. Sci. 89, 5--126 (1999; Zbl 1005.11030)].
