The symplectic oscillator algebra is a semidirect product of a symplectic Lie algebra and a Heisenberg algebra. This paper studies the representation theory of a deformation of this Lie algebra. The article starts by introducing, in a more general setting, concepts familiar from representation theory of semisimple complex Lie algebras, such as the BGG-category \(\mathcal O\) and Verma modules. In the special case \(n=1\), that is of the `symplectic' Lie algebra \(\mathfrak{sp}(2)=\mathfrak{sl}(2)\), more details are given on the structure of Verma modules and on character formulae. In this case, the category studied is not semisimple, and composition multiplicities may be bigger than one.
