Let \(A\subset R\) (\(R\) --- the set of reals) be a nonempty set. Let \(C(A)\) denote the family of all continuous functions \(f: A\to R\) and let \(D(A)\) be the set of all functions \(f: A\to R\) having the Darboux property (a function \(f: A\to R\) is said to have the Darboux property whenever \(f(I\cap A)\) is a connected set for every interval \(I\subset R)\). The author investigates connections between the continuity and the Darboux property assuming that the sets \(C(A)\) and \(D(A)\) are endowed with the metric of the uniform convergence. It is shown, e.g., that if a set \(A\subset R\) containing more than one point, is not an interval, then the set \(C(A)-D(A)\) has a nonempty interior. Another interesting result of the paper asserts: If \(A\subset R\) is such a set that \(\text{cl}(A)\) is a nondegenerate interval and for every open interval \(I\) with \(A\cap I\neq\emptyset\) the intersection \(I\cap A\) contains a nonempty perfect set, then the set \(C_ 0(A)\cap D(A)\) is dense in \(C_ 0(A)=\{g: A\to R\); there is \(f\in C(R)\) such that \(g=f| A\}\).
