Arguments of \textit{J. Levine} [Comment. Math. Helvet. 44, 229-244 (1969; Zbl 0176.221) and 45, 185-198 (1970; Zbl 0211.559)] are adapted to show that the group of homology cobordism classes of homology 3-knots (smooth embeddings of homology 3-spheres in \(S^ 5)\) is an extension of the homology cobordism group of homology 3-spheres by the 3-knot concordance group \(C_ 3\). Similar ideas are used to estimate analogues of the Murasugi genus for such homology 3-knots. As an application (in conjunction with a theorem of \textit{S. K. Donaldson} [J. Differ. Geom. 24, 275-341 (1986; Zbl 0635.57007)]) it is shown that a theorem of \textit{X. Michel} [C. R. Semin. Plans-sur-Bex 1982, Monogr. Enseign. Math. 31, 175- 190 (1983; Zbl 0557.57014)] on isolated singularities of hypersurfaces in \({\mathbb{C}}^{n+1}\) with \(n>2\) does not extend to the case \(n=2\).
