In an earlier work of \textit{H. B. G. S. Gundling} and \textit{C. A. Hurst} [Commun. Math. Phys. 98, 369-390 (1985; Zbl 0578.46064)], systems with constraints have been formulated in terms of a \(C^*\)-algebra \({\mathcal F}\) and a closed subspace \(P_ D\) of the set P of states of \({\mathcal F}\), consisting of all \(\omega\in P\) which satisfies \(\omega (U)=1\) for all U in a specified group \({\mathcal U}\) of unitaries in \({\mathcal F}\). In the present work, a corresonding theory for a group of automorphisms of \({\mathcal F}\) instead of \({\mathcal U}\) is developed and is applied to the free Gupta-Bleuler electro-magnetism which is formulated on the algebra of canonical commutation relations.
