The paper is devoted to the classification of tilings of the 2-dimensional sphere by congruent triangles. The problem is considered as a purely combinatorial one, not assuming a transitive group action on the set of tiles. Such a classification was given by Davies in [\textit{H. L. Davies}, Proceedings of the Colloquium on Convexity (ed. W. Fenchel), 42-51, Københavens Univ. Mat. Inst., Copenhagen (1967)], but only with a rough outline of the proof. The paper under review contains a new classification of tilings of the 2-dimensional sphere by congruent triangles with a complete proof and with some corrections. The authors show that there exist ten sporadic and ten series of such tilings, including some unfamiliar twisted ones.
