Let \(A=K[x_1,\ldots,x_n]\) be the polynomial ring in \(n\) variables over a field \(K\). Let \(F\) be an \(l\times m\) matrix with entries in \(A\), where \(l\leq m\). Suppose the rank of \(F\) is \(r\) and the greatest common divisor of all \(r\times r\) minors of \(F\) is \(d\). If \(a\) is a minor and \(a=db\), then \(b\) is called the reduced minor. Using the Quillen-Suslin theorem the authors show the following: If all reduced minors of a matrix \(F\) generate the unit ideal \(A\), then \(F=GH\), where \(G\) is an \(l\times r\) matrix, and \(H\) is an \(r\times m\) matrix such that all \(r\times r\) minors of \(H\) generate the unit ideal. As an easy consequence the authors obtain a solution to the Lin-Bose problem which is known to be equivalent to the generalized Serre problem.
