This article discusses the R. L. Moore (the article does not give his full name: it is Robert Lee) school of topology, its roots, its members, views from the outside, and -- of course -- his way of teaching, the Moore method. The darker side of Moore's personality is only hinted at: since there were only a few black students at Texas University during Moore's tenure, ``the fact that none was ever in his classes may not have attracted much overt attention''.
