A submanifold of codimension 2 in an almost Hermitian manifold inherits an induced structure consisting of a tensor field f of type (1,1), the induced metric g, two 1-forms u and v and a function \(\lambda\) satisfying several algebraic relations [see either the paper or the reviewer's paper with \textit{G. D. Ludden} and \textit{K. Yano} [Kōdai Math. Semin. Rep. 22, 188-198 (1970; Zbl 0202.209)]. On the other hand starting with a manifold M admitting tensors fields f, g, u, v, \(\lambda\) satisfying these algebraic relations, one can define an almost complex structure J on \(M\times {\mathbb{R}}^ 2\). The Nijenhuis tensor of J gives rise to a number of tensor fields on M, the three most important for the present purpose being denoted by \(N^ h_{ji}\), \(N^*_{ji}\) and \(N^{\#}_{ji}\). In particular the author shows that if \(N^ h_{ji}\), \(N^*_{ji}\) and \(N^{\#}_{ji}\) vanish and if \(\lambda (1-\lambda^ 2)\neq 0\) almost everywhere, then J is integrable. The author then studies this structure on a submanifold of codimension 2 in \({\mathbb{C}}^{n+1}\). The main results are as follows: Let M be a submanifold of codimension 2 in \({\mathbb{C}}^{n+1}\) with trivial normal connection. If \(N^ h_{ji}\) and \(N^*_{ji}\) vanish, then M lies in a real hyperplane in \({\mathbb{C}}^{n+1}\) and furthermore, if M is complete, it is a sphere, plane or the product of a sphere and a plane. If \(N^ h_{ji}\), \(N^*_{ji}\) and \(N^{\#}_{ji}\) vanish, then M is totally geodesic.
