This is a lecture paper covering two topics. The first topic is concerned with the problem of how the law of central attraction was deduced from Kepler's second law. The achievements of Huyghens, Newton, Hermann, J. Bernoulli and Euler are reviewed preceded by a tribute to Galilei. The other topic is devoted to the reception of Newtonian mechanics by the Bernoullis and Euler during the elaboration of hydrodynamic equations.
