The paper develops a complete theory for the generalized gradient systems, which are highly nonlinear evolution problems. Existence, stability and approximation results are established. A basic technique used consists in passing to the limit in a time-discretization scheme. An application to a system of partial differential equations for material models with finite-strain elasticity is presented.
