In this paper, the author deals with quasicomplexes of pseudodifferential operators defined on a compact closed smooth manifold \(X\) in the sense that the curvature of \(C^{\infty}(X, F\, \dot)\) is a smoothing operator. A quasicomplex of pseudodifferential operators is called elliptic if its symbol complex \(\pi^*F\) is exact away from the zero section of \(T^* X\). It is shown that elliptic quasicomplexes are Fredholm. In order to obtain a version of the Atiyah-Singer index theorem for elliptic quasicomplexes, the author introduces the notion of the Euler characteristic for such quasicomplexes. This is accomplished by associating to each elliptic quasicomplex an elliptic complex for which the operators differ from the original ones by smoothing operators.
