This paper discuss an important problem in nonlinear algebra -- see, for example [\textit{V. Dolotin} and \textit{A. Morozov}, ``Introduction to nonlinear algebra'' (Hackensack, NJ: World Scientific) (2007; Zbl 1134.15001)] -- that is, it studies homogeneous polynomial maps \(z_i \mapsto A_i^{i_1 i_2 \cdots i_s} z_{i_1} z_{i_2} \cdots z_{i_s}\), their eigenvectors and eigenvalues. Discriminants and resultants (or hyperdeterminants) are the main functions in nonlinear algebra, and such that the vanishing of the resultant determines the existence condition for a nontrivial solution of a system of nonlinear equations, and the vanishing of the discriminant determines the degeneracy condition of a nonlinear form -- see [\textit{I. M. Gel'fand, M. M. Kapranov} and \textit{A. V. Zelevinsky},`` Discriminants, resultants and multidimensional determinants'' (Boston, MA: Birkhäuser) (1994; Zbl 0827.14036), reprint (2008; Zbl 1138.14001)]. In this paper, the author considers a new quantity, called the \textit{complanart}, which measures the degeneracy of a system of polynomial equations. It is explicitly shown how to calculate this quantity for two and three variables, and, in fact, in two variables it reproduces the well-known expressions for the discriminant of quadratic and cubic equations. The author also discusses the eigenvectors and eigenvalues of a nonlinear map, and applications of the developed methods to the theory of polynomial differential equations.
