The authors study a chain of maps with unidirectional coupling: \[ x_n(t+1)= (1-c) f_a(x_n(t))+ cf_a(x_{n-1}(t)), \tag{1} \] where \(t\) is the discrete time, \(n=1,2,\dots, N\) is a spatial index and \(x_0(t)\) is a given boundary condition. Note that one may consider the model (1) as a possible discretization of the PDE of Ginzburg-Landau with spatial gradient. To study spatial complexity of (1) the authors define a quantity that measures the degree of sensitivity of the system to the boundary conditions and study its relation with the comoving Lyapunov exponents.
