Let \(X\) be a complex projective variety of dimension \(n\). If \(X\) is a good minimal model of Kodaira dimension \(\kappa(X)<n\), then \(c_1(X)^n=0\) and according to the Bogomolov-Miyaoka-Yau inequality we have \((-1)^nc_1(X)^{n-2}c_2(X)\geq 0\). In this paper the authors give a complete classification of the case when \(\kappa(X)=n-1\). In this case \(X\) is birational to a quotient \(Y=T\times E/G\), where \(Y\) has canonical singularities, \(E\) is an elliptic curve and \(T\) is a normal projective variety with \(K_T\) ample, and \(G\subset \mathrm{Aut}(T)\times \mathrm{Aut}(E)\) is a finite group which acts diagonally, faithfully on each factor and freely in codimension two on \(T\times E\). The authors also show that there exists a constant \(\epsilon >0\) such that if \(\dim X=3\) and \(c_1(X)^{2}c_2(X)\neq 0\) then \(-c_1(X)^{2}c_2(X)\geq \epsilon\).
