A concise survey of part of the major results concerning minimal submanifolds is presented by the author, who has strongly contributed to the recent development of the subject. Starting with the celebrated Bernstein theorem, see [\textit{S. Bernštein}, Charĭkov, Comm. Soc. Math. (2) 15, 38--45 (1915--1917) (1915; JFM 48.1401.01)] the author traces a historical path through important contributions containing multifarious extensions of this fundamental result. The central role of the Dirichlet problem is also detached where the difficulties for the case in higher codimensions, pointed out in [\textit{H. B. Lawson jun.} and \textit{R. Osserman}, Acta Math. 139, 1--17 (1977; Zbl 0376.49016)], lead the way to the author's own contributions to the subject.
