In this paper, the authors analyze the class of naturally graded filiform \(n\)-Lie algebras, in analogy with work already done for the case of filiform Lie algebras. An analogous notion is defined for the \(n\)-ary case, where the recently introduced concept of hyponilpotent ideal plays a central role. Starting from a special algebra that generalizes the model filiform Lie algebra to \(n\)-Lie algebras, the derivations are inspected in detail, allowing the authors to obtain a classification of solvable \(n\)-Lie algebras possessing a maximal filiform hyponilpotent ideal. An interesting structural property emerges from this analysis, namely that, in contrast to the usual case of Lie algebras, such solvable \(n\)-Lie algebras admit outer derivations whenever \(n> 3\).
