This work proposes a complete characterization of the entanglement of Werner states (that are multipartite quantum states that are invariant under the diagonal conjugate action of the unitary group), that turns out to be independent of the underlying local Hilbert space. More precisely, it is shown that for every entangled Werner state there exists a dimension-free entanglement witness whose construction is formulated as an optimization problem. Two semidefinite programming hierarchies are considered in order to solve such a problem, one derived using real algebraic geometry applied to positive polynomials in the entries of a Gram matrix, and one based on a sum-of-squares certificate for the positivity of trace polynomials in noncommuting variables. Some interesting additional remarks close the paper.
