Let \(\psi:G\rightarrow H\) be a surjective group morphism. If \(R=\bigoplus_{g\in G}R_g\) is a \(G\)-graded ring, then the \(\psi\)-coarsening of \(R\) is the \(H\)-graded ring \(R\) with the homogeneous component of degree \(h\) being the sum of all \(R_g\) with \(\psi(g)=h\). In a similar way, a \(G\)-graded \(R\)-module can be regarded as an \(H\)-graded module over the \(\psi\)-coarsening of \(R\), defining in this way a coarsening functor. The aim of the paper is to investigate the behaviour under coarsening functors of simple, entire or reduced graded rings, of free graded modules over principal graded rings, of superfluous monomorphisms and of homological dimensions of graded modules.
