The present article studies local operator algebras, that is, complex vector spaces \(V\) with a separating family of matrix seminorms and a multiplication satisfying a suitable contractivity condition. This concept generalises abstract operator algebras, which by a result of Blecher-Ruan-Sinclair [\textit{D. P. Blecher} et al., J. Funct. Anal. 89, No. 1, 188--201 (1990; Zbl 0714.46043)] constitute an equivalent point of view on concrete operator algebras. Their characterisation shows that every operator algebra has a faithful representation in the algebra of bounded linear operators \(\mathcal{B}(H)\) on a Hilbert space \(H\). A key class of examples of local operator algebras, which play the role of the algebra of bounded operators on a Hilbert space in this theory, is obtained from what is called a ``quantised domain'' in the field, explaining the unexpected appearance of the term ``quantised Hilbert module'' in the article's title. A~quantised domain is a Hilbert space \(H\) with a fixed ascending family of Hilbert subspaces \(\mathcal E = (H_\alpha)_\alpha\) whose union \(D = \bigcup_\alpha H_\alpha\) is dense in \(H\). Then \begin{gather*} \mathrm{C}^*_{\mathcal E}(\mathcal D) = \{ T \in \mathrm{End}_{\mathbb C}(\mathcal D) \mid \forall \alpha: \: T(H_\alpha) \subseteq H_\alpha \text{ and } T|_{H_\alpha} \in \mathcal B(H_\alpha) \} \text{.} \end{gather*} The algebras \(\mathrm{C}^*_{\mathcal E}(\mathcal D)\) play the same role for local operator algebras as \(\mathcal B(H)\) does for operator algebras. In particular, a representation of a local operator algebra \(A \to \mathrm{C}^*_{\mathcal E}(\mathcal D)\) gives rise to the notion of a quantized Hilbert module. With the above notion at hand, the authors find and prove analogues of results from the theory of operator algebras in the setting of local operator algebras.
