Let \(W_ n\) be the Lie algebra of formal vector fields in \({\mathbb C}^ n\) and \(L_ 1(n)\) the subalgebra generated by vector fields with trivial 1-jet at 0. Using a simple addendum to the ``second fundamental theorem of invariant theory'', the authors extend the results of the second author on the continuous cohomology of \(W_ n\) which are to be found in [ibid. 17, No. 4, 61--69 (1983; Zbl 0552.17009)]. As an application they give generators and relations for the Lie algebra \(L_ 1^{\text{pol}}(n)\) of all polynomial vector fields in \(L_ 1(n)\). They also show that the subalgebra of \(L_ 1^{\text{pol}}(2n)\) consisting of Hamiltonian fields is generated by its linear elements.
